Episode 14: OG Chicago in New York!

In this episode, we’re joined by new team member Becca to review our AMAZING experience watching the Takarazuka OG version of Chicago at the Lincoln Center Festival! We have a VERY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM: in our OG-related excitement we completely forgot to mention Okamoto Tomotaka, who gave us a TRULY OUTSTANDING Mary Sunshine! His charm and incredible singing voice made him a New York audience favorite, deservedly so. Thank you for lending us your talents!!

Additional talking points we need to clarify:

  • Carly mentions the 20th anniversary of Chicago, but it’s actually the 20th anniversary of the Broadway revival, AND it’s been in an ongoing run worldwide since then!
  • Ootori Ran played Roxie and Asami Rei played Velma in Chicago in 1985-86. It was the second Japanese performance of Chicago, and Asami Rei’s first show as an OG, according to Wikipedia.
  • Jen was thinking of Yuzuki Reon’s Prince of Broadway when we were talking about Damn Yankees
  • Yamato Yuuga has been playing Tuxedo Mask in every revival production of the Sailor Moon musicals since 2013
  • The Takarazuka cast of Chicago meets Chita Rivera: Playbill and Getty Images (the latter shows a lot of Mizu crying and Wataru with the best heart eyes)
  • If you’re interested in joining Aizuki Hikaru’s fanclub, contact Sakiko (mysinging) on the TakaWiki forum
  • Which OG would you add to the cast of Chicago if you could? Tell us in the comments!

  1. To start off the “Which OG” discussion… even though it has a less than negative likelihood of ever happening, I’d kill for Maya Miki Billy!

  2. I ended up seeing 5 performances. My favorite mix and match cast would be Zunko, Mizu, Komu. Everyone did great and I enjoyed every performance.
Yea for the Encore. Loved seeing Hayami Sei again and meeting her afterwards (thanks Jen). Didn’t think she’d be in New York and was surprised when she showed up in the Encore.
I also enjoyed seeing Tsukio Kazusa (Harry) as part of the cast. She was my favorite dancer in Hanagumi. What would have made it perfect was if Sonoka was part of this.
Top marks to ‘the jury’. Enjoyed watching her every performance.
The fan brunch was icing on the cake. Always enjoy talking to other fans. It was a busy week and I had so much fun!
I would also kill for a Maya Miki Billy.

  3. Carly, Jen, and Becca
Thank you for another awesome episode..
    Yes.. Chicago production was wonderful.
But my highlight of the week was the Fan Brunch..
It was so much exciting for me to mingle with other fans.
Glad to know everyone was happy about Mitsuya Nao’s visit and the autographed items from Aichan.
Thank you again for mentioning about Aichan’s Club.
She loooooooooved the video message from us.
Her family said, ” How Lucky my daughter is !! So many foreign fans support her ”
    Thank you all..

    1. Wow, I’m so glad Aichan and her family liked the message! Thank you again for your help making the brunch special 🙂

  4. Wow, this sounds like it was such a dream. I’m very sad I missed out on the big fan meet-up, but I was busy buying a house and planning a wedding at the time T___T;;

I would have loved to have met some of the non-top actresses like Suzu Haruki and Koumi Maito at the stage door… I love them so much ;___; But thank you for such a detailed review of everyone’s performances and the atmosphere of the theater; I may have teared up a couple of times <3 Not quite but almost as good as being there myself!!
